CHAPLINI is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of the Belgian artist Manor Grunewald (born 1985) in Germany.
Manor Grunewald considers himself first and foremost as a painter, although he is also active in the fields of sculpture, installation and prints. His work is characterised by the constant analysis of the development of the pictorial in our daily environment. He finds and collects the sources of his images everywhere in daily life: in newspapers, advertising, books, comics, digital media and even illustrations of biological microcosms and macrocosms. His image archive serves as a source of inspiration, and his found pictorial material is often altered, partially on purpose and in some cases arbitrarily, by copying, enlarging or collaging. The artist thus creates new pictorial information, which is largely free of cognitively controlled processes and which reveal the unfamiliar, allowing this to become the content of his painting.
In his exhibition title, “Unhelpful Hunt”, Manor Grunewald quotes an excerpt from the 1960s cartoon “Loopy De Loop” by Joseph Barbera, the story of a wolf with a French-Canadian accent, who tries to do good in an attempt to disprove the cliché of the “bad wolf”, but constantly fails and is always misunderstood. With the subtitle, “Ze hat is not mine – I´m just trying it on for size”, Grunewald quotes the protagonist of the cartoon in a play on the ideological significance of the artist’s dilemma and the source of the viewer’s criticism: The artist in general is constantly juggling new ideas in a continuously flowing process of wrestling with trends, without however, in the words of Grunewald, “coming to results or finalising anything”. This, in turn, gives rise to the preconceived criticism of the viewer with regard to the meaning and significance of art.
Grunewald’s current exhibition, “Unhelpful Hunt”, in which he presents large-format works on canvas and sculptures, which closely correspond with each other, addresses this process of the artist’s experimental search for image content.
In these recent works, his painting is concerned with the optics, visual conformity, imperfection and arbitrariness of the phenomenon of the black-and-white copy. On the canvases are superficially dark colour gradients, which, like the “colour” produced by a black-and-white photocopy machine, oscillate between shades of black, grey, violet and dark blue. The artist also transfers onto his canvases the “blackening”, distortion and layering of the photocopy process, which leads to colour stains, reflections, white edges and blurred objects, such as fragments of the cartoon character “Loopy De Loop”. The artist sees the sculptures on view – created on the basis of opened wooden transport crates, which are then spackled, taped and collaged to become supports for painting – as a continuation of his painting in space.
Grunewald’s work is thus characterised by an experimental process, with which the unseen and the visually irrational are able to emerge and develop in his work.
Manor Grunewald was born in 1985 and lives and works in Ghent, Belgium. He received several prizes in the field of painting and installations. In 2008 he received the ‘Gaverprijs’, Waregem (B), in 2011 he won the ‘BNP Paribas Fortis Young Ones Award’, Brussels (B) and he was selected for the ‘Young Belgian Painters Award’ and exhibited at BOZAR, Brussels (B). In 2012 he was nominated for the ‘Provinciale Prijs Beeldende Kunst Oost-Vlaanderen’, Ghent (B).His residencies include “Kulturbunker”, Frankfurt Am Main (D) in 2010, Frans Masereel Centrum, Kasterlee (B) in 2013.His work was included in interesting exhibitions in Belgium and abroad e.g.‘Young Flemish Masters’ at the Hermitage in Amsterdam in 2011 (NL). In 2012 Manor Grunewald had a solo-exhibition at Highlight Gallery, San Francisco (US) and his third solo-exhibition at Galerie Fortlaan 17 in October 2013. For 2014 he is planning his residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York.

CHAPLINI freut sich, die erste Einzelausstellung des belgischen Künstlers Manor Grunewald (Jahrgang 1985) in Deutschland zu zeigen.
Manor Grunewald versteht sich selbst schwerpunktmäßig als Maler, obgleich er auch in anderen Genres wie der Bildhauerei, der Installation und der Druckgrafik tätig ist. Sein Schaffen ist geprägt von der ständigen Auseinandersetzung mit der Entstehung des Bildhaften in unserem Umfeld. Seine Bildvorlagen findet und sammelt er überall im Alltag: in Zeitungen, in der Werbung, in Büchern, Comics, in digitalen Medien, aber auch in Abbildungen von biologischen Mikro- oder Makrokosmen. Sein Bilder-Archiv dient ihm als Inspirationsquelle, seine Bild-Fundstücke werden oftmals durch Kopieren, Vergrößern oder Collagieren teilweise gezielten, teilweise aber auch willkürlichen Veränderungen unterworfen. Der Künstler erschafft sich neue Bildformationen, die überwiegend frei sind von kognitiv gesteuerten Prozessen und Ungewohntes zum Vorschein bringen und zum Inhalt seiner Malerei werden.
Manor Grunewald bezieht sich in seinem Ausstellungstitel „Unhelpful Hunt“ auf den 60er Jahre Comic „Loopy De Loop“ von Joseph Barbera, die Geschichte eines Wolfes mit französisch-kanadischem Akzent, der gutes tun möchte, um das Cliché des „bösen Wolfes“ zu widerlegen, aber immer wieder scheitert und missverstanden wird. Mit dem Untertitel „Ze hat is not mine – I´m just trying it on for size“ zitiert Grunewald den Comic-Protagonisten, um auf die ideologische Bedeutung eines Künstler-Dilemmas und die Quelle der Kritik des Kunst-Betrachters anzuspielen: Stets jongliert der Künstler im Allgemeinen mit neuen Ideen in einem ständig fließenden Prozess des Ringens um Richtungen, ohne jedoch zu „resultieren oder gar zu finalisieren“, so Grunewald. Dies wiederum ruft die clichéhafte Kritik des Betrachters um die Sinnhaftigkeit und Bedeutung der Kunst hervor.
Grunewalds aktuelle Ausstellung „Unhelpful Hunt“, in der er großformatige Leinwandarbeiten und Skulpturen ausstellt, die stark miteinander korrespondieren, greift genau diesen Prozess der experimentellen Suche des Künstlers nach Bildinhalten auf.
Seine Malerei beschäftigt sich in diesen neuen Arbeiten mit der Optik, der visuellen Gesetzmäßigkeit, Fehlerhaftigkeit und Willkür des Phänomens der Schwarzweißkopie. Auf den Leinwänden finden sich vordergründig dunkle Farbverläufe, die sich ähnlich dem Farbauftrag des Schwarzweißkopierers in Schwarz-, Grau-, Violett- oder Dunkelblauabstufungen bewegen. Auch setzt der Künstler auf der Leinwand die „Schwärzungen“, Verzerrungen und Überlagerungen des Kopierens um und so finden sich in seinen Leinwänden Farbflecken, Schattierungen, weiße Ränder und verschwommen Gegenständliches wieder, wie z.B. Fragmente der Comicfigur „Loopy De Loop“. Die ausgestellten Skulpturen, die auf Basis von aufgeklappten, hölzerne Transportkisten entstehen, versteht der Künstlers als Fortsetzung seiner Malerei im Raum.
Grunewalds Arbeit ist somit geprägt von einem experimentellen Prozess, Ungesehenes und visuell Irrationales in seiner Arbeit entstehen zu lassen.
Manor Grunewald, geboren 1985, lebt und arbeitet in Gent, Belgien. In 2011 gewann er den „BNP Paribas Fortis Young Ones Award“ in Brüssel, er gehörte zu den Nominierten des „Young Belgian Painters Award“ im BOZAR, Brüssel und stellte zudem in der „Hermitage“ in Amsterdam in der Ausstellung „Young Flemish Masters“ aus. Im Jahr 2012 wurde er für den Preis „Provinciale Prijs Beeldende Kunst Oost-Vlaanderen“ nominiert. In 2014 nimmt er als Stipendiat am International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York teil.
