Johanna von Monkiewitsch “308 g/m2” (07.09.-12.10.2013)
Die Galerie Chaplini freut sich, die erste Einzelausstellung der Künstlerin Johanna von Monkiewitsch in der Galerie im Rahmen des „Düsseldorf Cologne Open Galleries“ Wochenendes (DC OPEN) zu eröffnen.
Johanna von Monkiewitschs Arbeiten sind Fotografien oder Filme, die Künstlerin versteht ihre Arbeiten jedoch in übertragenem Sinne als Bildhauerei.
Ausgangspunkt Ihrer aktuellen Arbeit bildet zumeist ein simples gefalztes oder geknicktes Blatt Papier und die sich ergebende oder inszenierte Licht-Schatten Situation, inklusive ihrer Reflektionen, Spiegelungen, Überlappungen und Farbverläufe. Dieses Papierobjekt wird fotografiert und anschließend meist auf Hahnemühlepapier im Pigmentdruckverfahren gedruckt. Das entstandene Foto erfährt wiederum Falzungen an den selben Stellen, offeriert aber nun in veränderten Licht-Kontexten neue plastische Eigenschaften, die sich in der Ambivalenz von Tatsächlichem und Illusionärem bewegen. Die Frage nach Bild, Abbild und einer sich neu formulierenden Wirklichkeit und seinen Beziehungen rückt ins Zentrum der Betrachtungen.
In diesen Arbeiten legt die Künstlerin ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die Materialität des Papiers, seine Anmutung, Haptik und skulpturale Eigenschaft, die sich aufgrund von Wölbungen oder Überlagerungen in ihren Fotoarbeiten und die von ihr arrangierten Formen oder Blattformationen ergeben.
Das kompositorische Gesamtbild ihrer Arbeiten ist von Minimalität geprägt, die Raum und Aufmerksamkeit schafft für eine Betrachtung der Details:
Die feinen Pigmentverläufe des Drucks stehen nun der tatsächlichen Papierstruktur, den plastischen Formungen und Falzungen gegenüber. Zudem eröffnen sich insbesondere in einer Serie schwarz dominierter Fotografien, auf 308 g schwerem Papier, neue Aspekte ihres plastischen Diskurses: Die Spiegelungen und Reflexe sowie tiefschwarzen Bereiche der Vorlage lassen in dem nun entstandenem Werk eine andere Materialität imaginieren.
Johanna von Monkiewitsch, geboren 1979 in Rom, studierte an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HBK) in Braunschweig und schloss dort ihr Studium 2007 als Meisterschülerin von Heinz-Günter Prager ab. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Köln und hat z. Zt. ein Atelierstipendium des Kölnischen Kunstvereins.

Johanna von Monkiewitsch “308 g/m2” (7 September – 12 October 2013)
Chaplini is pleased to announce the gallery’s first solo exhibition with new works by Johanna von Monkiewitsch. The exhibition takes place in conjunction with the “Düsseldorf Cologne Open Galleries” weekend (DC OPEN).
Although Johanna von Monkiewitsch works with photographs and film, the artist sees her work as sculpture in the broadest sense of the term.
The starting point of the majority of her current works is the simple folding or bending of sheets of paper and the resulting, and in some cases staged, effects of light and shadow, including reflections, mirroring, layering and colour changes. This paper object is then photographed and, in most cases, printed on Hahnemühle paper by means of a pigment printing process. The resulting photo is then folded along the same lines as the original paper object, which, as a result of the altered light context, leads to new sculptural characteristics, which oscillate in the ambivalence of the factual and the illusionary. Questions regarding original image and reproduction, as well as a newly formed reality and its relationships, become the focus of consideration.
In these works, the artist places special emphasis on the materiality of the paper, its physical appearance, haptics and sculptural properties, which result from the buckling or layering of her photographic works and the arranged forms or sheet formations.
The overall composition of her works is influenced by a certain minimalism, which creates space and leads to a heightened attention to details: The fine pigment gradients in the print are contrasted with the actual structure of the paper, as well as with the resulting sculptural forms and folds. Especially in her series of predominantly black photographs on 308 g paper, new aspects of her sculptural discourse reveal themselves: The mirror-effects and reflections, as well as the deep black areas of the original paper object lead here to a new materiality in the photographic work.
Johanna von Monkiewitsch was born in Rome in 1979 and studied at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK), where she completed her studies as a Master Student of Heinz-Günter Prager. She lives and works in Cologne and is currently a recipient of a studio grant in the Cologne Kunstverein.
